Another fascinating item to see in the Air and Space Museum is the famous aircraft known as “The Spirit of St Louis”.
The Spirit of St. Louis (Ryan NYP, registration N-X-211) is the custom single-engine monoplane Charles Lindbergh flew on his groundbreaking solo nonstop flight across the Atlantic. On May 20–21, 1927, he took off from New York and landed in Paris roughly 33.5 hours later after covering about 3,600 miles, winning the $25,000 Orteig Prize. Built in San Diego by Ryan Airlines, the famous aircraft later served on U.S. mail routes before finding its permanent home suspended in the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.
Today marks the 99th anniversary of the beginning of that historic flight.
